My Work (examples)

During my time at Penn State I was involved in many projects. The results are unique documents that showcase some of what I have learned, and they include a version of the site you are now exploring. Below you will find some other examples of documents I have created, as well as a short description of each.

The effects of stress and cortisol levels on the presence of erectile dysfuction
This document is an example of a summary article written for my Reproductive Physiology Class. I was assigned the topic of Erectile Dysfunction (ED) and asked to find at least 5 articles to summarize, all relating to ED. Since ED is a widely studied topic, due to its prevalence in the human population, I further refined my topic by relating ED to stress and cortisol (a prevalent stress related hormone). My summary found that each article agreed in finding a higher prevalence of ED and SDF (sexual dysfunction) in participants suffering from PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). When studying cortisol, the articles agreed that cortisol levels dropped immediately prior to an erection in healthy males and played an inhibitory role to forming an erection at higher than normal levels.

Purification of Acid Phosphatase from Wheat Germ
This document is an example of an informal lab report done for a beginner level Biochemistry class. Over the course of a three week period, my partners and I were given a sample of wheat germ and required to purify the sample of Acid Phosphatase (an enzyme capable of removing a phosphate group, used to convert ATP to ADP). Over the course of the refinement process we had to collect samples of the fluid to study the level of enzyme activity in each sample. After recording all of our results, each member of the group was required to write their own informal lab report describing their results and why they got these results.

How to Build Your Own Bookcase
For this assignment, each student was required to create a set of instructions based on their own background in the topic. To create my document, I pulled much of my experience working to build sets for musicals during high school, refurbishment projects with my dad while growing up, and even a set design and building class I took as an elective at Penn State. Students were encouraged to use design and graphics to assist in the user's understanding.

Understanding Your Brain
This assignment was to create a document that served the dual purpose of creating a technical definition and description, while also understanding the planning and mechanics behind completing a group project. For this document, our class was divided into teams of four students. Each team had to choose a topic that each person would be able to contribute a significant portion of the project. Since our group contained people from different majors (including petroleum engineering and biology majors), a topic was difficult to decide that everyone could contribute to. After picking a topic we agreed that each of us would contribute an equal share and then refine the final product as a group so that it presented a more cohesive document.
